Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Stan Cliburn is the twin brother of pitcher Stew Cliburn. Both played for the California Angels at different times. Stan's big league look came during the 1980 season, as the Angels basked in the glow of a division title one year prior. Doing his work spelling Tom Donohue and other backup catchers, Stan only mustered a .179/.217/.321 line in 54 games (56 at bats). His next tangle with big leaguers came in 1989 as a member of the Bradenton Explorers of the Senior Professional Baseball Association. He hit .281 with 4 homers and 31 RBI in 61 games, leading the league with most games played at catcher (58). In 1990, Stan played for the Daytona Beach Explorers of the SPBA and batted .156 in 11 games before the league went belly up.

Post-playing, Cliburn was a long-time minor league manager. Upon being named manager of the Rochester Red Wings in October 2005, he reunited with brother Stew, the club's pitching coach; the pairing lasting from 2006 to 2008. The dynamic duo had also worked together with the New Britain Rock Cats from 2001 to 2005. He was a coach for the Gastonia Rangers in 1992, Lancaster Barnstormers in 2014, and Chicago Dogs in 2018. In 2015, he was manager of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, moving to the New Britain Bees in 2016 for two seasons.

He returned to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in 2019. As of 2023, his fifth overall year with the Blue Crabs, he has won 1,962 games as a minor league manager. This places Cliburn in the top 20 all-time for wins as a minor league manager.
