Team History[edit]
After the Springfield Cardinals and Springfield Sultans of the Midwest League moved to other cities (1994 and 1996 respectively) the Springfield Capitals were added to the Frontier League by purchasing and relocating the existing Portsmouth Explorers franchise and the Capitals won the championship in their first season. They won again in 1998 due to the FL Most Valuable Pitcher Jason Simontacchi.
The Capitals left for Rockford and became the Rockford RiverHawks in 2001 due to lack of fan support and playing in an aging field.
