Biographical Information[edit]

Simon Steffen has pitched for the Swiss national team.

He allowed one run in 1 1/3 IP for the Zürich Barracudas in the 2016 CEB Cup. [1] He made the Swiss team for the 2017 B-Level European Championship but did not get into a game. [2] In 2018, he moved to the Zürich Challengers and was 4-3 with a 5.82 ERA. [3] The next year, he was 1-3 with a 4.91 ERA. [4]

Steffen was roughed up for 11 runs in 4 2/3 IP in the 2019 CEB Cup. [5] In the 2019 B-Level European Championship, he allowed one run in 4 1/3 IP. [6] In Switzerland in 2020, he had a 1-1, 6.11 record and hit .122/.328/.146. [7] The next summer, he fell to 0-2, 6.35. [8]

Starting for Switzerland against Slovenia in the 2021 European Championship Qualifiers, he allowed one hit, five walks and four unearned runs in 2/3 of an inning, striking out one, before Hideori Oshima took over. [9] In '22, he was 7-2 with a save and a 6.32 ERA for the Challengers. [10] He allowed 11 runs (5 earned) in 2 1/3 IP in the 2022 European Championship Qualifier but the Swiss team won to advance to the 2023 European Championship, their first European Championship. He was 0-1 with a 13.09 ERA for the Challengers in the 2023 Federations Cup and was 1-for-14 with 10 strikeouts. He had 31 chances error-free between catcher, pitcher and the outfield. He lost to Apollo Bratislava and James Kontur. He tied José Luis Larrinaga for third in the event in IP (11), tied Anderson Gerdel for 2nd in hits allowed (16), gave up the most runs (16, 5 more than Gerdel) and the most earned runs (16, 6 more than Martin Gieci). [12] In the Ligue Nationale A that year, he was 4-2 with a save but a 7.22 ERA. [13] He was with Switzerland for the 2023 European Championship, making one appearance. In their debut against Israel, he relieved Andrea Girasole in the 5th with a 13-1 deficit. He yielded a Benny Wanger single then got Assaf Lowengart and Zev Moore on grounders. After walking Robb Paller, he allowed a two-run double to Blake Dickman. He walked Jonathan Zeevi but retired Ben Rosengard to end the frame. Marco Limacher took over in the 6th. He was the 8th of 10 pitchers they tried against Germany, replacing William Vasseur with a 8-4 deficit in the 7th. He allowed two hits, a walk and three unearned runs in one inning then gave way to Oshima. He closed out their 12-3 loss to Italy, taking over for Girasole and allowing two hits, two walks and a run in the final 1 1/3 IP; he got his first strikeout of the event, long-time minor leaguer Alberto Mineo. He tied for 7th in the event in games pitched, tied for the Swiss lead. His 5.40 ERA was 5th on the 12-man staff. [14]
