Biographical Information[edit]
Shih-Peng Chen has pitched in the CPBL and for the Taiwanese national team.
Chen was with Taiwan for the 2012 U-15 Baseball World Cup and U-15 Asian Championship. [1] The EDA Rhinos took him in the 2nd round of the 2016 CPBL Draft after going with Hao-Wei Shen in round one. [2] The team became the Fubon Guardians before he debuted with them in the 2017 CPBL (3 H, 5 BB, 5 R, 3 ER in 2 IP; 0-1). In 2018, he was 0-2 with a 7.24 ERA. [3] He made big strides in 2019 at 11-8, 3.48. He was 3rd in ERA after imports Mike Loree and Mitch Lively and tied for 4th in wins (with Michael Nix and Kai-Wen Cheng). He won the CPBL Most Improved Player Award. [4]
That earned him a spot on Taiwan's team for the 2019 Asian Championship. He pitched one game for the champs, starting against South Korea and going 3 2/3 IP, allowing 3 hits and 3 walks but no runs, while he fanned four. He was relieved by Hsin-Chieh Lin with a 1-0 lead and Taiwan won, but Lin got the decision as Chen had not worked five innings. [5] Chen was 6-10 and had a career-worst 5.21 ERA in 2020. He bounced back a little with 4.72 ERA, but recorded league-leading 12 losses due to lack of run supports. In 2022, Chen came back strong and had a career-high 2.69 ERA with 8 wins. He broke the team record of most strikeouts by a local pitcher with 12 Ks on October 5. He then made Taiwan's roster for the 2023 World Baseball Classic. [6] Chen started against Cuba in the last game of Taiwan, but allowed 5 runs in only 1 2/3 innings. He had a 3.60 ERA in 22 games in 2023, and he also pitched 2 shutout innings in the 2023 CPBL All-Star Game.
His repertoire features a fastball that peaks at 90 mph, a slider, curveball and cutter.
