Biographical Information[edit]
Sean Watson pitched in the Cincinnati Reds system from 2006 to 2010 and in the Florida Marlins chain in 2011. He reached Triple-A in 2009, but spent just 4 games there.
He was originally taken by the San Francisco Giants in the 21st round of the 2003 amateur draft, a couple picks after infielder Travis Denker, but he opted not to sign. He did sign after being taken by the Reds in the 2nd round of the 2006 amateur draft, between pitcher Jeff Locke and outfielder Chad Huffman. He was signed by scout Perry Smith.
Baseball America ranked him the Reds' #7 prospect going into 2007, and that year proved to be his best, as he went 9-6 with a 3.42 ERA in 27 games (23 starts) between the Sarasota Reds and Dayton Dragons; In 126 1/3 innings, he had 135 strikeouts. He was named a Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star that year. In 2008, he had 13 saves and 75 strikeouts in 55 relief innings after transitioning to the bullpen. In 2008 and 2009, he earned a spot in the semi-exclusive Arizona Fall League, but struggled each time, posting ERAs of 9.95 and 7.11, respectively.
The Reds released him in July 2010 and the Marlins signed him in January 2011. He had a 2.57 ERA in 12 games for the Greensboro Grasshoppers in 2011 to wrap up his career.
Overall, Watson went 18-21 with a 4.13 ERA in 187 games (27 starts) in the affiliated minors. In 337 2/3 innings, he allowed 306 hits and 165 walks (1.395 WHIP), while striking out 360 batters.
