Biographical Information

Sam "Buddy" Woods was a pitcher in the Negro Leagues and minor leagues.

Woods debuted in 1946 with the Cleveland Buckeyes, then spent the next eight years with the Memphis Red Sox. He had records of 4-6, 3.80 in 1948, 1-8, 5.93 in 1949 and 10-6, 4.06 in 1950. Woods started and won the 1953 East-West Game for the West. He allowed one run on four hits in three innings, striking out one and throwing one wild pitch. He was 0 for 1 at the plate. Isiah Harris relieved him in the 5-1 win.

He made it into the minors in 1955 with the Pampa Oilers and had a 10-11, 5.89 record in the high-scoring West Texas-New Mexico League. With Pampa in '56, he was 14-10 with a 5.16 ERA. He bounced around in 1957, going 4-4 with a 8.36 ERA for the Plainview Ponies, 0-1 for the Yakima Bears and 3-7 with a 5.29 ERA for two Arizona-Mexico League clubs.
