Saúl Torres played six years in the minor leagues, hitting over .300 in half of them, and has been with the Venezuelan national team at times.

Torres hit .395 for Vonoco in the 2000 Venezuelan Summer League to top that circuit in batting average. In 2001, the youngster returned to the VSL despite his 2000 success; he batted .320 with 4 homers and 41 RBI. His 5 triples were one shy of the league lead.

In 2002, Torres came stateside with the Martinsville Astros and hit .271/.390/.375 as their main third baseman. He repeated with Martinsville in '03, hitting .318/.406/.435 with 40 runs in 57 games. His 118 assists led Appalachian League third basemen and he ranked 7th in the league in average. He made the league All-Star team at third base and helped Martinsville make it to the finals.

Torres moved up to the Lexington Legends in 2004 and batted .252/.321/.340. His .955 fielding percentage led third basemen in the South Atlantic League. In 2005, Saúl wrapped up his US career with the Legends (.277/.354/.531 in 36 games) and Salem Avalanche (.255/.316/.351 in 86 G). Overall, he hit 13 home runs and scored 76 runs. His 25 errors with Salem tied Bryan Bass for the most miscues by a third sacker in the Carolina League.

Torres represented Venezuela in the 2007 Pan American Games, going 1 for 8 with a run and five strikeouts. In the 2007 Baseball World Cup, he was Venezuela's starting third baseman. He went 4 for 20 with two walks, but two of his hits were home runs. He led the team in home runs and tied Luis Alen for the lead with 5 RBI.
