Pitcher Ryan Doolittle played professionally from 2008 to 2016. He reached Triple-A for the first time in 2016.
Although he went only 0-2 with a 7.32 ERA while at University of North Carolina-Wilmington in 2007, the Athletics were willing to take a chance and they drafted him in the 26th round of the 2008 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Marc Sauer. He began his professional career that season with the AZL Athletics, appearing in 14 games (making seven starts) and going 2-3 with a 4.44 ERA.
He strained his UCL and missed the 2009 season. In 2010, he pitched for the Vancouver Canadians (2-0, 7 H, 3 UER, 1 BB, 18 K in 16 IP) and Kane County Cougars (2 Sv, 4.07 in 18 G), going a combined 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in 24 relief appearances. In 40 1/3 innings, he walked only two batters and had 37 strikeouts. With the AZL Athletics (0-2, 14 H, 7 R in 4 2/3 IP) and Stockton Ports (3-0, 2.21) in 2011, Doolittle was 3-2 with a 4.32 ERA in 9 games (3 starts), walking 3 batters and K-ing 31 in 25 innings.
He was 1-3 with 42 strikeouts, 3 walks and a 1.32 ERA in 23 relief appearances (34 innings) for the Burlington Bees (2 Sv, 0.93 in 8 G) and Stockton Ports (1-3, 1.48 in 15 G) in 2012 and in 2013, he was 1-2 with a 2.12 ERA in 6 games (5 starts) for the AZL Athletics (1-0, 1 R in 11 1/3 IP) and Stockton Ports (0-2, 4.76 in 2 G). In 17 innings, he allowed only 2 walks and struck out 10 batters. Through his first 163 innings of work as a pro, he walked only 20 batters. He split 2014 between the Stockton Ports (6 G, 1.80 ERA) and Midland RockHounds (30 G, 3.23 ERA) and went a combined 5-4 with a 2.98 ERA in 36 games. In 57 1/3 innings, he struck out 60 batters and walked 21. With Midland again in 2015, he had a 3.32 ERA in 40 appearances, striking out 46 batters and walking 16 in 57 innings. The 28-year-old Doolittle reached Triple-A for the first time in 2016, but also played at Double-A. Between the RockHounds (13 G, 1.04 ERA) and Triple-A Nashville Sounds (17 G, 4.05 ERA), he went 3-3 with a 2.86 ERA in 30 games, striking out 29 and walking 14 in 44 innings.
Overall, he was 21-20 with a 3.05 ERA in 182 minor league games (15 starts). In 321 1/3 innings, he allowed 310 hits and just 71 walks, while striking out 292 batters.
His brother, Sean Doolittle, made his major league debut in 2012.
