Biographical Information

Right-hander Roy Sanders started his sixteen year professional baseball career in 1914 with the Omaha Rourkes of the class A Western League. The twenty year old would end up his first season with a 5-1 record and a 1.08 ERA. Roy then proceeded to have losing records in the next two seasons and then with the 1917 Joplin Miners he threw an 18-12 number at the same Western League while pitching 327 innings in 45 games.

Sanders opened up the 1918 year with the Toledo Iron Men of the American Association, fell to a 4-13 record and was picked up by the American League New York Yankees on August 6, 1918, went directly to the mound and would wind up the '18 year going 0-2 with a 4.21 ERA in his first try at getting major league hitters out. Roy was back with the now, Toledo Mud Hens for the 1919 season, and had a 12-19 year with a 2.97 ERA for the seventh place club. He was then selected off waivers by the St. Louis Browns from the New York Yankees on December 24, 1919.

The right-hander started the 1920 season with the Browns and went 1-1 with a 5.19 ERA before an injury sidelined him for the rest of the season. This ended his tour in the major leagues with a 1-3 record and a 4.60 ERA while pitching 43 innings. Roy returned to the minors for the 1921 season and had his career best 18-11 season with a 4.98 ERA for the Louisville Colonels of the American Association. Sanders would spend the next seven seasons in the American Association, from (1922-1924} with the Columbus Senators and in (1925-1928) with the Milwaukee Brewers. During this run Roy had five years with double-diget wins, unfortunately, in four of them he lost more then he won.

Sanders would wind up his professional career with the Nashville Volunteers of the Southern Association with an 8-6 record in 1929 and 2-5 in 1930. The 36 year old pitcher would call it a career at the end of the '30 season and his 16 year minor league totals show Roy with a 163-189 record and a 3.76 ERA while appearing in 595 outings and pitching 3,084 innings.

After baseball he worked for the Oertel Brewing Company 25 years, retiring in 1960. Roy Lee Sanders died July 8, 1963, at the age of 69 at the St. Joseph Infirmary in Louisville, KY.
