Biographical Information[edit]

Starting pitcher Robert Gilliam pitched in the Oakland Athletics system from 2009 to 2011 and in the Washington Nationals system from 2012 to 2014. He was taken by the Athletics in the 8th round of the 2009 amateur draft, a few picks ahead of future MVP Paul Goldschmidt. He was signed by scout Neil Avent.

He reached double-digit wins only once, in 2011 with the Stockton Ports. In 28 starts, he went 12-7 with a 5.04 ERA, striking out 156 batters in 164 1/3 innings and leading the California League in games started (tied with Jerry Sullivan and Eric Smith) and home runs allowed (24). On December 23, he was traded with pitcher Gio Gonzalez to the Washington Nationals for pitchers A.J. Cole, Tommy Milone and Brad Peacock and catcher Derek Norris.

He went 28-30 with a 4.85 ERA in 113 games (89 starts) overall. In 523 innings, he allowed 524 hits and 185 walks (1.356 WHIP), while striking out 472 batters. He peaked at Double-A.
