Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher Rob Leary was drafted in the 12th round of the 1986 amateur draft by the Montreal Expos. He caught for six seasons in the Expos organization, from 1986 to 1990. He reached as high as AAA for two games in his last year, but spent most of his time as a back-up in Class A. He was never much of a hitter, never again matching the .252 he hit or the 20 RBI he collected in his first season with the GCL Expos. He hit 4 home runs for the Rockford Expos in 1998, then was used in 48 games with the AA Jacksonville Expos the next season, hitting .212 with a .345 slugging percentage.
After his retirement as a player, he was slated to become the manager of the GCL Expos in 1991. However, events in Montreal changed his career path: Buck Rodgers was fired as Expos manager in late May; bench coach Tom Runnells became manager; AAA manager Jerry Manuel was promoted to a coaching job in Montreal; Rockford Expos manager Pat Kelly moved up to the Indianapolis Indians and Leary suddenly found himself as manager in the Midwest League only three years after he had played for Rockford. The team did well under his stewardship, finishing third overall (out of 14 teams) although out of the playoffs. Leary managed three more seasons in the minors.
Leary was the Minor League Field Operations Director for the Florida Marlins in 1999 and a Marlin advance scout in 2000-2001. He was the Boston Red Sox' Minor League Catching Instructor in 2002 and became the Red Sox' Minor League Field Coordinator in 2003, keeping the position until 2009. In 2010 and 2011, he worked for the Red Sox as a major league staff assistant. In 2012, he was named minor league field coordinator for the Cleveland Indians. In 2013, he was appointed bench coach of the Miami Marlins, working with new manager Mike Redmond. Both of them were fired on May 17, 2015, after the Marlins had failed to get off to a good start even though management had made large investments to build a competitive team during the off-season.
