Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher Red Smith played one game with the New York Giants in 1927, then started his minor league career. After the 1928 season, Smith was drafted from the Montreal Royals by the Boston Braves but was released to the Baltimore Orioles (IL), returned immediately to Boston, then released to the Providence Grays. Smith continued playing in the minors through 1938, but was out of organized baseball in 1931 and 1933-1935.
This is Richard "Red" Smith, not to be confused with James Carlisle "Red" Smith, Marvin Harold "Red" Smith and Willard Jehu "Red" Smith, also a catcher.
He was a coach for the Milwaukee Brewers (AA) in 1939-1940, and again in 1943-1944. Smith was a Chicago Cubs coach from 1945 to 1948 and a scout for the Cubs in 1949-1951.
Smith also served as a GM for the Milwaukee Brewers (AA) and Toledo Mud Hens in the 1950s.
Smith served as an athletic coach at Georgetown University in 1930 and was the athletic director at Seton Hall University in 1931-1932.
Football career[edit]
Smith played football with the Green Bay Packers (1927, 1929), New York Yankees (1928), Newark Tornados (1930), and New York Giants (1931). He was the football coach at the University of Wisconsin in 1933-1935, and the line coach for the Packers from 1936 to 1943. and the Giants in 1944.
