Biographical Information

Red Smith was an infielder, principally a shortstop, seven years (1925-1931), all in the minors except for a cup of coffee in 1925. Red Smith was born on Tuesday, July 17, 1900, in Ashley, IL. Smith was 24 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 14, 1925, with the Philadelphia Athletics. He played in 20 games and was 4 for 14 with a run and an RBI at (.286/.375/.286). He played his last game in MLB on September 26, 1925 at age 25 and returned to the minors with the Portland Beavers in the Pacific Coast League (1926), the Nashville Volunteers in the Southern Association (1926), Pittsfield in the Eastern League (1927), the Beaumont Exporters in the Texas League (1927), Omaha and Amarillo in the Western League (1927), the Wichita Larks in the Western League (1928), the Muskogee Chiefs in the Western Association (1929), Bisbee in the Arizona State League (1930), the Vicksburg Hill Billies in the Cotton States League (1930) and the El Dorado Lions in the Cotton States League (1931), ending his baseball playing career at age 31.

He then turned to scouting. Smith was a veteran of both World Wars I and II(BN). He was a PVT (26TH TECHNICAL SCH SQ AC USA) in the U.S. Army in World War II (VA/CM). He died at age 68 at a VA Hospital in Los Angeles CA from heart disease on February 19, 1961 and is buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery (section Q, site 311), Point Loma, California.
