Randy Wells was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 38th round of the 2002 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Mark Adair and made his pro debut that summer.
Originally a catcher, he began with the Boise Hawks, hitting .188 in 9 games before being sent to the AZL Cubs, where he hit .146 in 14 games. He began 2003 with the Lansing Lugnuts and hit .149 in 24 games. During a blowout with Lansing, Wells threw a perfect inning to save the pitchers on the staff. The Cubs then informed him he was a pitcher, he rejoined the AZL Cubs, with whom he was converted to the mound, posting a 3.60 ERA in 3 games. He was back with Lansing the next year, going 6-6 with a 4.43 ERA and 1 save in 36 games. He split 2005 between the Daytona Cubs and West Tenn Diamond Jaxx, posting a 10-3 record and a 2.83 ERA.
Wells began 2006 with West Tenn before ending the season with the Iowa Cubs, going 9-7 with a 3.37 ERA between the two stops. He was back with Iowa in 2007 and went 5-6 with a 4.52 ERA in 40 appearances, split between the bullpen and rotation. He was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2007 Rule V Draft following the season and made the team's Opening Day roster in 2008. However, he pitched only one game for the Jays and was returned to the Cubs, with whom he came back up late in the season for three additional games. He posted a spotless ERA and no hits allowed in 5 ⅓ innings of major league work as a result.
