Biographical Information[edit]

Randy Schwartz, an All-American at UCLA, was signed in by the Kansas City Athletics in 1965 and came to the majors that same year at age 21. He had 18 major league at-bats over two seasons and played first base. The regular first baseman at the time for the Athletics was Ken Harrelson.

He was at UCLA at the same time as Gail Hopkins and Bobby Floyd.

Schwartz was one of a number of youngsters on the A's, including Rick Monday (two years younger), Catfish Hunter (two years younger), Blue Moon Odom (one year younger) and Sal Bando (same age).

Randy started his minor league career in 1964, and finished in 1967, still only 23 years old. In his last minor league season, he played for the AAA Vancouver Mounties, hitting .272 with 7 home runs. His teammate Sal Bando, also 23, hit .291 with 9 home runs, so Randy didn't look bad by comparison.
