Amateur Career[edit]
Fontanez had a 1.66 ERA as a high school junior, then improved to 1.11 with 81 K in 75 2/3 IP as a senior, winning All-County honors. As a freshman in college, he was 5-3 with a 3.54 ERA and led the Big East Conference with four pick-offs. He improved to 7-3, 3.09 as a sophomore. He fell to 5-7, 3.59 as a junior but still made All-Big East Conference second team; highlights were when he threw a no-hitter against Notre Dame and when he beat UConn ace Matt Barnes. The Cincinnati Reds took him in the 23rd round of the 2010 amateur draft but he opted not to sign. As a senior, he had a 5-6, 2.92 record with only 11 walks in 95 2/3 IP, again making All-Big East second team. The New York Mets chose him in the 27th round of the 2011 amateur draft; the scout was Les Parker.
Professional Career[edit]
Fontanez made his pro debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones, going 1-2 with a 2.82 ERA in 12 games (7 starts) in 2011. He split 2012 between the Savannah Sand Gnats (3-4, 4.90 in 28 G) and St. Lucie Mets (0 R in 3 IP), working in a relief role. As his grandparents were born in Puerto Rico, he was eligible to pitch for the Puerto Rican national team in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, being a late replacement for injured outfielder Andres Torres. Fontanez debuted for them against the rival Dominican national team; with a 4-2 deficit, one on and none out in the 9th, he relieved Xavier Cedeño. He got Francisco Peña to hit into a double play, allowed a single to Miguel Tejada and then retired Nelson Cruz.
