Biographical Information[edit]
Ramon Borrego briefly reached AAA as a player before becoming a manager.
Borrego signed with the Minnesota Twins in late 1995. He made his pro debut in 1996, playing for the GCL Twins (.357/.430/.457 in 19 G) and Fort Myers Miracle (.196/.274/.268 in 16 G). In 1997, he hit .280/.366/.393 for the Elizabethton Twins. He played at least 25 games at third base, second base and the outfield for the 1998 Fort Wayne Wizards and hit .261/.351/.353. He stole 17 bases in 27 tries. Fort Fort Myers in 1999, Borrego batted only .221/.287/.256 in 27 games. He hit .223/.308/.253 as a utility infielder for the 2000 Miracle.
In 2001, Ramon produced at a .184/.265/.279 rate in 60 games for the New Britain Rock Cats. He split 2002 between New Britain (1 for 5) and the AAA Edmonton Trappers (.180/.222/.260 in 28 G, one scoreless inning pitched).
Borrego worked with the VSL Twins as a coach in the Venezuelan Summer League from 2005-2008. In 2009 he was promoted to manager of the DSL Twins. Borrego moved stateside in 2010 and started the year as a coach for the GCL Twins. When manager Chris Heintz left after just seven games to coach at his alma mater, Borrego took over as manager and remained in that role through the 2017 season. After that he started moving up the minor league ladder as indicated below. He was scheduled to be the manager of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19.
In addition to managing in the Twins organization, Borrego has extensive experience coaching in the Venezuelan League. He spent five seasons (2009/2010 through 2013/2014) working for the Navegantes del Magallanes, the first three seasons at first base and the last two seasons at third base. After two years away, he was the third base coach for the Caribes de Anzoátegui from 2016/2017 - 2018/2019. In 2021/2022 Borrego coached third base for the Cardenales de Lara.
