Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Pedro León started his baseball career in his native Cuba playing two series in the Cuban Serie Nacional with Huracanes de Mayabeque in 2017-18 and 2018-19 with a lot of success as he batted .333 and .383 respectively, the latter year with excellent power as well. He then defected from the island and was eventually declared a free agent, allowing him to sign with the Houston Astros on [[January 15], 2021.

Pedro was immediately regarded as one of the top prospects in the Astros' organization, given his success in Cuba, although the question was where exactly he was on the development ladder given his age - 23 - and recent lack of baseball activity. He was assigned to the Corpus Christi Hooks of the Double-A Central, where he hit .249/.359/.443 in 52 games. He was named to the American League team for the 2021 Futures Game, then a week later on July 17th was promoted to the Sugar Land Skeeters of Triple-A West. Unfortunately, an injury cost him all of August and forced him to undergo a short rehabilitation stint in the Florida Complex League, so that he played just 17 games in AAA, batting .131. To compensate for the time lost, the Astros then sent him to play in the Arizona Fall League after the season.

In 2022, he had a disappointing season, hitting just .228 in 115 for the renamed Sugar Land Space Cowboys, with 17 homers and 63 RBIs. In 2023, he played 128 games for Sugar Land and hit .244 with 21 homers and 72 RBIs, but once again was not called up to the majors. In 2024 he started his third straight season at Sugar Land and in 93 games hit .297 with 19 homers and 74 RBIs. That finally earned him a look in the Show and he made his big league debut on August 3rd, starting in right field against the Tampa Bay Rays and batting ninth. He went 1 for 3 with a strikeout in a 6-1 loss, his first big league hit coming off Zack Littell leading off the 3rd inning. Unfortunately, he was caught stretching, being thrown out at second base by LF Jonny Deluca.
