Biographical Information

Patrick Mahomes is one of the biggest stars of the National Football League as the quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, leading them to their first Super Bowl win in half a century, over the San Francisco 49ers in 2020, then to a return engagement in 2021, which they lost to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and a third one in 2023, which resulted in a second win as he defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in the first-ever matchup of African-American starting QBs in the event's history. In 2024, he made it four appearances in five years when he again faced the 49ers, and his opponent was Brock Purdy, son of long-time minor league pitcher Shawn Purdy. The Chiefs won that game as well, with Mahomes being named MVP, making them the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champs in two decades. He is the son of major league pitcher Pat Mahomes and was also drafted as a baseball player, although he gave up the sport in college.

He grew up around major league baseball clubhouses, as his father was active until 2003. It became quickly apparent that he was also a gifted athlete, as he was a multiple sports star at Whitehouse High School. In addition to being one of the best prep football players in the country, he was an outstanding pitcher who already threw in the low 90's and had achieved a no-hitter, and also a very talented shortstop. In the 2014 amateur draft, he was selected in the 37th round by the Detroit Tigers. Based on pure talent, he would have gone much higher, but he already had a strong commitment to attend Texas Tech University on a football scholarship and there was little prospect of his giving up that opportunity.

At first he played both sports in college, but only got into 3 games with the varsity baseball team before concentrating full-time on football. It was a wise decision because, as a junior in 2016, he led the nation in passing for over 5,000 yards and 53 touchdowns. He won the Sammy Baugh Award as the top college quarterback in the country and declared for the NFL draft, foregoing his final year of college eligibility. The Chiefs took him with the 10th overall pick of the 2017 draft. He was a back-up to Alex Smith his rookie season in 2017, but became a starter in 2018 after Smith was traded and immediately began re-writing the record book. He was named the league's MVP that year and took his team to the AFC Championship game. He was again the league MVP in 2022.

He remains a baseball fan and has invested some of his football earnings in buying a minority ownership share in the Kansas City Royals.
