Biographical Information

NFL Hall-of-Fame quarterback Sammy Baugh spent one season (1938) as an infielder in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system, splitting his time between two Cardinals AA minor league clubs when that was the highest level of the minors. Baugh played for the American Association's Columbus Red Birds and the International League's Rochester Red Wings. For Columbus, Sammy hit .220/~.233/.254 and fielded .928 in 16 games, all at shortstop, as Pat Ankenman was the main SS used. Baugh fanned 13 times and walked just once in 59 at-bats. He spent most of the season with Rochester, batting .183/~.266/.254 with his only home run in 71 at-bats and drove in 13 runs despite just 13 hits as the backup to future star Marty Marion. He fielded .943. Overall he had hit .200/~.252/.254 with one home run and no steals and fielded .936. He did not play any more seasons as a pro baseball player, devoting his time thereafter to football.

In 1936, Baugh had played in the Denver Post Tournament, getting the chance to have his team beaten by Satchel Paige.

Baugh's former college football teammate Dutch Meyer went on to a much brighter baseball career.
