Biographical Information

Pat Deasley, born in Ireland, played eight seasons in the major leagues. He was not much of a hitter, but was a sure-handed catcher who also filled in at other positions on occasion. There is some discrepancy on the location of his birth. In older editions of the Baseball Encyclopedia, his birth place is listed as Philadelphia, PA.

Deasley broke in with Harry Wright's Boston team in the National League in 1881, and moved to the American Association where Charlie Comiskey was one of his teammates and managers.

Most of his teams finished well over .500, but none of them won the pennant. The year after he left the St. Louis Browns, they won the pennant, though, and the year after he left the New York Giants, they too won the pennant.

He is one of four players supposedly born in Ireland in 1857, with the others being John McGuinness, Barney McLaughlin and Tony Cusick. His brother, John Deasley, played 44 games at shortstop for Washington and Kansas City in the Union Association in 1884.
