Biographical Information

"Barney McLaughlin, the new pitcher for the Anthracite club arrived on Saturday night. He is said to be what is known in base ball circles as a 'Daisy'." - from a website quoting a local paper describing McLaughlin's arrival in 1882

Barney McLaughlin played three years in the majors for three different teams in three different leagues.

In his first year, with the 1884 Kansas City Cowboys of the 1884 Union Association, he pitched 7 games but was primarily a right fielder and second baseman. His .228 batting average was better than the team's .199 average.

He struggled with the 1887 Philadelphia Quakers of the 1887 National League, hitting .220 on a team which hit .274. Manager Harry Wright used eight different second basemen that year, of which Barney, with 50 games, appeared the most often.

He did better with the bat while playing for the 1890 Syracuse Stars of the American Association, hitting .264 on a team which hit .259. While his slugging percentage was below the team average, his on-base percentage was well above the average. He appeared in 86 games, always at shortstop.

His minor league career ran through at least 1892.

He was the brother of Frank McLaughlin.
