Biographical Information[edit]

Pat Bangtson is a college coach who won over 60% of his decisions as a pro, having reached AAA.

Bangtson was All-State in high school. At Kent State, he was 26-17 and set school records for wins and innings pitched (313 2/3). He was first-team All-Mid-American Conference as a senior in 1987 when he had a 8-5, 3.11 record.

Pat was picked by the Minnesota Twins in the 23rd round of the 1987 amateur draft. He split the '87 minor league season between the Elizabethton Twins (3-2, 1.85) and the Kenosha Twins (2-1, 3.66). With Kenosha for all of 1988, he had a 17-5, 2.87 record. He led the Midwest League in victories and was near the top 10 in ERA. He lost All-Star RHP honors to Tom Gordon.

Bangtson went 15-10 with a 4.76 ERA for the 1989 Orlando Twins to finish second in the Southern League in wins behind Laddie Renfroe. In 1990, he spent all season with the AAA Portland Beavers, going 6-7 with a save and a 5.55 ERA, plus a WHIP of 1.79 for the only losing season of his minor league career.

Sent back down to Orlando in 1991, Pat's record was 12-11 with a 3.44 ERA. He tied Mike Trombley for the team lea in wins but was not the best Pat in their starting rotation - that was Pat Mahomes, the league leader in ERA.

From 1992-2005, Bangtson was assistant coach at Ohio State University. He worked with 27 pitchers who would enter the professional ranks. He became head coach at the University of Akron in July 2005. In 2008, he took the school to its first winning record in 11 years. He resigned in June 2011 with a record of 119-188.
