Biographical information

Osiris Matos was a righthanded pitcher who pitched with the San Francisco Giants for a couple of seasons.

Originally signed by scout Rick Ragazzo for the Giants in 2002, he started his professional career that year with the AZL Giants, going 4-2 with a 4.65 ERA. In 2003, he returned to the AZL Giants and went 2-2 with a 4.67 ERA in nine games, six of which he started.

2004 was an improvement for him. Again with the AZL Giants, he went 2-0 with a 2.44 ERA in 11 games, eight of which he started. He also struck out 47 batters in 48 innings of work.

In 2005, he pitched for the Augusta Greenjackets. In 29 games (22 of which he started), he did poorly, posting an 8-8 record with a 4.99 ERA. He struck out only 79 batters in 135 1/3 innings of work.

Splitting time between the Greenjackets and Connecticut Defenders in 2006, Matos did extremely well - especially with the Greenjackets. Used entirely as a reliever, he appeared in 44 games for the Greenjackets, saving 13 games and striking out 81 batters in 61 innings of work. He posted a 1.77 ERA with them. He then went on to pitch in six games for the Defenders, posting a 3.72 ERA there, saving two more games. Overall, he had a 1.91 ERA in 2006, saving 15 games and striking out 86 batters in 70 2/3 innings of work.

He was again used entirely as a reliever in 2007, and again he did very well. Like in 2006 he spent time with both the Greenjackets and Defenders, however he spent the majority of his time with the Defenders in 2007, as opposed to the previous year when he spent the majority of his time with the Greenjackets. Overall in 2007, he posted a 2.49 ERA with 52 strikeouts in 65 innings of work. He also saved eight games.

Through 2007, he had posted a 24-13 record with a 3.57 ERA so far in his minor league career. He had 24 career saves.

In 2008, Matos opened the season with Connecticut. After 23 games, he had a 1.23 ERA, over a strikeout per inning and a .191 opponent average. He had 8 saves as well, and replaced Sergio Romo at closer when Romo was called up. His good performance prompted his own promotion to the majors shortly thereafter, replacing Billy Sadler on the Giants' roster. In his debut in The Show, Osiris wrapped up a 8-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on July 3rd, relieving Romo. He retired Mark DeRosa on a grounder, struck out Ryan Theriot and got pinch-hitter Daryle Ward to fly out for a 1-2-3 MLB debut.

Matos became a pitching coach with the DSL Giants in 2017-2019, DSL Giants Orange in 2021, and DSL Giants Black in 2022-2023.
