Biographical Information[edit]

Omar Obregón has played in the minors and for the Nicaraguan national team.

He hit .267/.326/.335 for Estelí in 2011. [1] He was signed by Atlanta Braves scout Marvin Throneberry in July of that year. [2] He played for the 2012 DSL Braves and hit .269/.419/.290 while fielding .939 at short. He came to the US the next year, batting .227/.325/.245. During 2014, he produced at a .297/.384/.346 clip with the Danville Braves while moving to second base and fielding .992 there. He hit .404 against lefties. [3]

Moving up to full-season ball in 2015, the La Trinidad native hit .274/.336/.317 for the Rome Braves and stole 31 bases but was caught 19 times. He was 10th in the South Atlantic League in steals, tied Johneshwy Fargas for second in caught stealing and tied for 5th with 11 sacrifice hits. He played for Nicaragua in the 2016 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, going 2 for 6 with a run and two RBI. With a 4-3 deficit in the 9th against Germany, he pinch-ran for Sandor Guido and scored the tying run on an Elmer Reyes hit as Nicaragua would rally to win. His two-run single off Martin Schneider in the 11th proved crucial in a 7-6 win over Czech Republic. [4]

Obregón would spend the summer of 2016 with the Carolina Mudcats and hit .247/.298/.311 while missing time with a rib cage fracture; he played regularly at 2B (leading the team in games played) and SS (only 4 games behind leader Reed Harper. [5] He played in 2017 for the Florida Fire Frogs (.257/.315/.336 in 33 G) and Mississippi Braves (.320/.393/.400 in 8 G), reaching AA.

In the 2017 Central American Games, he split short with Iván Marín for host Nicaragua. He hit .444/.500/.556 but sat out their win in the Gold Medal Game. In the round-robin phase, he was 6th in average (between Gerald Chin and Anthony Amaya and tied Andres Velasco and Renato Morales for 7th in OBP. [6]
