Biographical Information[edit]

After attending Miami Southridge High School in the Miami, Florida area, catcher Omar Falcon was selected by the San Diego Padres in the third round of the 2000 amateur draft and made his pro debut that summer as a 17-year-old with the AZL Padres. He hit .275/.401/.483 in a good intro to pro baseball. He led Arizona League catchers in both putouts (234) and passed balls (21). He was rated the #6 prospect in the AZL by Baseball America.

Falcon batted .187/.396/.374 with 50 strikeouts in 107 AB for the 2001 Idaho Falls Chukars. His 13 passed balls tied for the Pioneer League lead. In '02, Omar hit .227/.363/.438 for Idaho Falls with 100 strikeouts in 226 AB and he was 0 for 5 with two walks and four Ks for the Lake Elsinore Storm. He led the Pioneer League in both strikeouts and errors by a catcher (13). His Three True Outcomes percentage was an amazing 66.8.

Falcon hit .191/.268/.345 for the 2003 Eugene Emeralds and .182/.372/.242 in 12 games for the Fort Wayne Wizards that year.

After having spent four seasons in the Padre organization, he was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the AAA phase of the 2003 Rule V draft. In 2004, he batted .222/.335/.373 for the Everett AquaSox. He led the Northwest League with 18 passed balls. At the beginning of the 2005 campaign, he was suspended 15 games for a steroid violation. He hit .272/.394/.441 for the '05 Wisconsin Timber Rattlers as the backup to Rob Johnson.

In 2006, Omar's batting line was .264/.396/.460 for the Inland Empire 66ers; despite playing only 48 games at catcher, he was the club's most-used option at that position.

After three years in the Mariners organization, he was again drafted in the AAA phase of the 2006 Rule V Draft and split 2007 between the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates organizations, briefly reaching the AA level with the Altoona Curve (1 for 16, 3 BB, 9 K). The other two teams he played for that season were the Swing of the Quad Cities (.253/.354/.398 in 24 G) and the Lynchburg Hillcats (.138/.317/.200 in 23 G).

Overall, Falcon hit .227/.362/.395 in 379 minor league games. He hit 42 home runs in 1,192 AB and walked 223 times, but had 492 strikeouts. He fielded .985 overall.
