Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Nick Yorke was drafted 17th overall by the Boston Red Sox in the first round of the 2020 amateur draft. That was the draft that took place in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic in which there were relatively few high school players being selected with high picks, but he was one of those who had shown enough before the lockdowns to warrant a high draft slot.
He had to wait until 2021 to make his professional debut, and appeared with two different teams that years, first with the Salem Red Sox of Low-A East, and late in the year with the Greenville Drive of High-A East. He did very well, hitting .325/.412/.516 in 97 games, with 76 runs, 14 homers and 62 RBIs. He was named a postseason All-Star with Salem and an organizational All-Star. Defensively, he played exclusively at second base. In 2022, he was back with Greenville, which itself was back in the South Atlantic League, but his production fell off markedly as he hit .232/.303/.365 in 80 games. But, just to show that this was a blip, he tore through the Arizona Fall League playing against the top prospects from other big league teams, as he hit .342 and slugged .526 in 19 games and was named to play in the "Rising Stars Game", the circuit's All-Star contest.
He was named to the American League team for the 2023 Futures Game. He spent that season in AA with the Portland Sea Dogs of the Eastern League, where he hit .268/.350/.435 in 110 games, with 74 runs and 61 RBIs. He was named an organizational All-Star for the second time after the season. In 2024, he was back in Portland to start the season and hit .251 in 45 games before receiving a promotion to the AAA Worcester Red Sox on June 5th. He hit .310 in 38 games there before he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 29th, in return for P Quinn Priester; this was one of two trades at the deadline in which the Bucs sent an excess pitching prospect to another team to acquire a promising position player, the other landing them OF Billy Cook. Nick hit .355 in 40 games for the Indianapolis Indians, switching teams but remaining in the International League, then was called up to Pittsburgh on September 16th, replacing Alika Williams on the roster. He made his debut that same day, starting at second base and hitting 7th against the St. Louis Cardinals; he went 0 for 3 in a 4-0 loss.
