Biographical Information

Nic Ungs pitched his 7th year in the minor leagues in 2007.

Ungs was 11-2 with a 2.48 ERA and 14 walks in 109 innings as a junior in 2001. He led the Missouri Valley Conference in wins, was second with 110 strikeouts (3 behind Neal Cotts) and was third in ERA. He was named the Conference Pitcher of the Year. The Florida Marlins selected him in the 12th round of the 2001 amateur draft.

Assigned initially to the Utica Blue Sox, Nic went 3-1 with a 1.62 ERA. He was 4th in the New York-Penn League in ERA, between Jason Arnold and Zach Miner. Amazingly, he walked no one and hit no one in 61 innings of work.

In 2002, Ungs went 7-7 with a save and a 3.73 ERA for the Kane County Cougars and 1-3 with a 4.34 ERA for the Jupiter Hammerheads. He split 2003 between Jupiter (8-3, 1.99) and the Carolina Mudcats (3-4, 3.53). He led the Marlins minor leaguers with 170 innings. Baseball America rated him as having the best control in the Florida State League - he walked only 14 in 113 1/3 innings. He finished second in the FSL in ERA, .01 behind Chadd Blasko. He made the FSL All-Star team.

Ungs was with Carolina all of 2004 and had a 11-8, 4.24 record. He tied Ross Wolf for the most wins by a Marlins minor leaguer. He led the Southern League in home runs allowed (24). He tied Clay Hensley for the most earned runs allowed (76). He tied Steve Kelly for the league lead in starts (28) and innings pitched (161).

In 2005, Ungs was 7-6 with a 3.68 ERA for the Mudcats. He pitched the first complete game no-hitter in Carolina Mudcats history, a 2-0 win against the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx on July 29. West Tenn led the league in hits, doubles and triples, and had a team average of .280 entering the game. The next year, his record was 9-9, 3.99 for the Albuquerque Isotopes. In the 2006 Americas Qualifier for the 2008 Olympics, Ungs was 2-0 with a 3.52 ERA for Team USA to help them earn an Olympic slot. He tied Heath Phillips and Zack Segovia for the team lead in wins. Ungs relieved Nick Adenhart in the 5th of a 8-7 win over the Brazilian national team and allowed one run in 1 1/3 IP. He relieved Greg Smith in the 5th against Puerto Rico and threw 2 2/3 scoreless to pick up a 5-2 win. In a 11-5 win against Panama, he replaced Smith in the 4th and allowed 3 runs in 3 2/3 innings but still earned his second victory.

Ungs began 2007 with Albuquerque and went 5-5 with a save and a 4.98 ERA. He was signed by the Brother Elephants in September, replacing David Manning on the roster, and made his debut in a win against the Macoto Cobras later that month.

He also played for the Melbourne Aces of the Australian Baseball League in the 2011-12 season.
