Biographical Information[edit]

First baseman Nathan Martorella was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 5th round of the 2022 amateur draft, out of the University of California. Three years earlier, coming out of high school, he had been taken by the Boston Red Sox in the 30th round of the 2019 amateur draft, but he decided to go on to college. In 2022, he .333 with with 11 homers and 46 RBIs in 55 games for the Golden Bears.

He started his professional career in 2022 with the ACL Padres and was promoted to the Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League after 11 games. Overall, he hit .322/.422/.511 in 28 games. In 2023, he played 112 games for the Fort Wayne TinCaps of the Midwest League and another 23 for the San Antonio Missions of the Texas League. His overall slash line was .255/.361/.437, with 30 doubles, 17 homers and 88 RBIs in 135 games. He was named a Midwest league postseason All-Star. He started the 2024 season back with San Antonio and was hitting .292 in 25 games when on May 3rd, he was removed from a game in the 3rd inning, being replaced by a pinch-runner after reaching base, because he had just been traded. The deal was in fact a big one, with San Diego acquiring two-time batting champion Luis Arráez from the Miami Marlins in return for Nathan and three other minor league players - Woo-Suk Go, Dillon Head and Jakob Marsee. He was assigned to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos of the Southern League.

His college bio mentions that he is related to former minor league player Mike Martorella, although their precise relationship is not specified.
