NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse, NY, is the home of the Syracuse Mets, the New York Mets' Triple-A International League farm team. It changed names in 2013, when NBT Bank merged with previous naming-rights holder Alliance Bank.
Its 1997 debut actually saw different names for both the HOK Sport (now Populous) ballpark and its team: P&C Stadium hosted the SkyChiefs. The long-time Chiefs had just prepended "Sky" because of - in their management's words - "political correctness". The "Sky" fell in 2007, with "Chiefs" now in a train context. P&C Foods later fell into bankruptcy; Alliance Bank landed the vacated naming rights in 2005.
A railroad track lies just beyond the left-field fence. It is used extensively for freight train traffic, and long trains can be seen and heard passing by throughout the games. This ties in to using "Chiefs" in the train engineer rather the tribal people sense. One of the team's two mascots is an old-time railroad station chief, dressed in the striped uniform commonly associated with railroad workers in the 19th century.
The stadium is also on the flight path of airplanes using nearby Syracuse International Airport, and these can also be seen easily. That tied in with the old "SkyChiefs" brand.
The club played, as the Chiefs, next door at MacArthur Stadium for many years. In 2019, the traditional Chiefs moniker was again abandoned when the team was renamed the Syracuse Mets as it moved from an affiliated to an owned-and-operated farm club. The Mets bought the Chiefs to escape their assigned affiliation with far-off Las Vegas.
