Biographical Information[edit]

"All I want is another chance. I'm not a flashy pitcher. I'm not outstanding. But I have knowledge for the game and I respond to pressure situations. Too often teams look at a pitcher's velocity, his size and what round he was taken when they consider signing him. They don't look at you as a person. I'm looking for that chance to meet someone who would recognize me as a pitcher who has the right makeup. I believe I can be an asset to any club." - Mike Capel, to the Arizona Daily Star, July 13, 1992

Mike Capel would not receive another chance in the big leagues after 1991, pitching parts of three seasons (1988; 1990-1991) with three different ball clubs: the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers and Houston Astros. His best look was likely his swan song, pitching to a 1-3, 3.03 record with 3 saves in 25 games out of the Astro bullpen. He endured eleven seasons in the minor leagues, his last with the Tucson Toros in 1993. In 1984, he stumbled through a 1-17, 4.90 season split with the Double A Midland Cubs and Single A Quad City Cubs.

Mike was a member of the Texas Longhorns that won the 1983 College World Series. He was part of a pitching staff that included Roger Clemens, Bruce Ruffin and Calvin Schiraldi. He also was on Team USA, Bronze medal winners in the 1982 Amateur World Series.

His son, Conner Capel, was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 5th round in 2016, then was dealt to the St. Louis Cardinals for Oscar Mercado in 2018 and made his major league debut in 2022.
