Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Mike Basso was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 18th round of the 1986 amateur draft and played nine seasons in their farm system. Slowed by knee injuries, his career peaked out at the AAA level. In his final season (1994), he was a player/coach for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.

After his playing career ended, he was the hitting coach for the Las Vegas Stars for the first couple of months of the 1995 season and then managed the Idaho Falls Braves once their season began. He continued managing in the San Diego Padres organization through 2000. In 2001-2002, Basso was an Advance Scout for the Padres.

Basso joined the Toronto Blue Jays in 2003 and managed in their minor league system through 2006. In his first season as skipper of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Basso led the team to a 84-57 record and the Eastern League championship. He was named the League's Manager of the Year for his efforts. After the 2006 season the Jays named Basso their Coordinator of Minor League Instruction and he stayed in that role for two years. Basso returned to managing for a final time in 2009 with the Las Vegas 51s.

The Pittsburgh Pirates hired Basso in 2010 as a Major League Scout, a position he retained through 2017. He spent 2018-2020 as a Major League Advance Scout for the Pirates. This ended his association with professional baseball.

Since 2021 Basso has been the Director of Player Development and a baseball coach for the Professional Baseball Academy.

His son, pitcher Brady Basso, made his major league debut in 2024.
