Mexia Gushers

From BR Bullpen

The Mexia Gushers were a minor league team located in Mexia, Texas. They played from 1922 to 1928 and were a part of three different leagues during that span.

The Gushers began play in 1922 in the Texas-Oklahoma League, and skipper Roy Akin led them to a 47-60 record, which placed them last among the six teams that completed the season.

In 1923, the Gushers joined the Texas Association and posted a league-best 80-60 mark. The team was managed by former big leaguer Hub Northen, and pitcher Al Tiner paced the circuit with 23 wins. The next summer, led by manager R.A. Fowlkes, the team slipped to fourth place with a 60-68 mark. The Gushers bounced back to a 76-57 record and second place finish under skipper Frank Matthews in 1925, as Clyde Glass led the league with a .367 average. The club stumbled to third place and a 63-62 record the next year despite Glass again leading the league with a .361 batting average and former major league Jimmie Long pacing the league with 99 runs and 164 hits.

The Gushers joined the Lone Star League in 1927 and under a trio of managers posted a 68-55 mark. The next summer, led by first baseman/manager Roy Leslie (another former big leaguer), the team dropped to 55-66 in their final season. No minor league club has called Mexia home since then.
