Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Masyn Winn was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2nd round of the 2020 amateur draft, out of a high school in Texas. He had been on scouts' radar for a while already, as he had played on the United States junior national team in both its U12 and U15 configuration.

He could not start his professional career immediately after being drafted, as the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic. He had to wait until the spring of 2021 to join the Palm Beach Cardinals of the Low-A Southeast. After 61 games of batting .262, he was promoted to the Peoria Chiefs of the High-A Central where he found the going tougher, batting .211 over his final 37 games. In 98 games overall, his batting line was .242/.324/.356, which was quite good for someone who was very young for both ciruits. He also scored 76 runs and stole 32 bases in 37 attempts. Defensively, he played shortstop exclusively, apart from 1 inning on the mound (he retired all three batters he faced).

In 2022, he started with Peoria, but this time, it was the rest of the league who could not keep up with him as he batted .349 in 33 games, earning a promotion to the AA Springfield Cardinals of the Texas League. There, he hit .258 in 86 games to finish at .283/.364/.468 in 119 games. His power started to emerge, as he banged out 36 doubles, 8 triples and 12 homers. He scored 91 runs and was outstanding as a base stealer, being successful on 43 of 48 attempts. He was selected to play for the National League in the 2022 Futures Game at Dodger Stadium on July 16th. While he committed one error at shortstop, he also put his rifle arm on display, with a throw measured at 100 mph by Statcast.

In 2023, he was assigned to the AAA Memphis Redbirds where after 105 games, he was hitting .288 with 18 homers, 99 runs and 61 RBIs. On August 17th, the Cardinals called him up to the big leagues when CF Lars Nootbaar was placed on the injured list with a groin injury. In his debut the next day against the New York Mets, he went 1 for 4 in a 7-1 loss, playing shortstop and hitting ninth. After he got his first major league hit in the bottom of the 5th, Mets 1B Pete Alonso inadvertently tossed the ball into the stands at Busch Stadium, for which he felt terrible, but stadium security was able to retrieve it from the fan who caught it, and exchanged it for a signed ball, so that Winn could have his souvenir.
