Biographical Information[edit]
Mark Manaig has been a regular for the Philippines national team.
He was a teenager in the 2017 Asian Championship, splitting catching with Alfredo de Guzmán and Dino Altomonte. He was 4-for-4 (all against Sri Lanka) with a walk, run and a RBI, throwing out 2 of 3 who tried to steal. [1] He hit .273/.273/.364 when the Philippines won the 2018 East Asian Baseball Cup, winning All-Star catcher honors - presumably, he made some big defensive plays as both Jack Daru and Ho-Nam Leung had much better offensive stats. [2] He helped the Philippines win Gold in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games and was listed as one of the team's star performers. [3]
Manaig batted .438 with 6 runs and 7 RBI in 4 games when the Philippines won the 2023 East Asian Baseball Cup to win a spot in the 2023 Asian Championship. He had three hits and three RBI in the finale over Hong Kong and was named the tourney's Outstanding Defensive Player though Ho-Yin Benny Tam beat him out as All-Star catcher. [4] In the 2022 Asian Games (held in 2023 after delays due to COVID-19), he was 3 for 12 with two walks, two run and two RBI, handled 27 chances error-free and threw out two of three who tried to run on him. Only Takehiro Tsujino was better at throwing out runners (2-for-2). [5]
