Biographical Information

Mario Hollands made the majors in 2014.

Amateur

Hollands was 9-2 with a 1.00 ERA as a high school junior and 7-2 with a 0.60 ERA and 89 K to 12 BB as a senior. He was 3-1 with a 3.47 ERA for the Peninsula Oilers in the Alaska Summer League, being named the league's #5 prospect. Redshirted in 2007, he was 7-3 with a 4.03 ERA in 2008. He tied for 9th in the Big West Conference in wins and was named Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year. He fell to 6-6, 4.74 as a sophomore. The Minnesota Twins took him in the 24th round of the 2009 amateur draft but he did not sign. In 2010, he had a 5-5, 3.77 record and was 5th in the Big West with 80 strikeouts. The Philadelphia Phillies took him in the 10th round of the 2010 amateur draft. The scout was Shane Bowers.

Minors

Mario was 4-4 with a 4.57 ERA that summer for the Williamsport Crosscutters. He struck out 63, good for 6th in the New York-Penn League. He had a 6-6, 4.24 record for the 2011 Lakewood BlueClaws. In 2012, the lefty pitched for all four full-season Phillis affiliates: the BlueClaws (0-1, 4.57 in 9 G), Clearwater Threshers (4-1, 2.17 in 6 G), Reading Phillies (3-5, 4.75 in 9 G) and Lehigh Valley IronPigs (0-2, 9.24 in 3 G). He tied for 8th in the Philadelphia farm system in losses. During 2013, he made good progress with Clearwater (4-1, 1.56 in 14 G) and Reading (3-2, 4.31 in 13 G), with 114 K to 32 BB in 132 IP. Among Phillies minor leaguers with 100+ IP, he was second to Severino Gonzalez in ERA. He was also third in their chain in strikeouts, behind Jesse Biddle and Gonzalez. That winter, he had a 2.45 ERA in eight outings for the Venezuelan League's Tiburones de La Guaira.

Majors

Having a solid spring in 2014, putting up a 3.09 ERA, with a fastball hitting 93-94 mph, Hollands was a surprise pick to make the Phillies' 25-man roster breaking out of camp. He got into his major league debut in the team's second game on April 1st, relieving Antonio Bastardo with a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the 9th against the Texas Rangers. He walked Shin-Soo Choo on four pitches then Elvis Andrus bunted Choo over. Prince Fielder walked on a full count and B.J. Rosenberg relieved Hollands, but allowed a game-losing hit to Adrian Beltre, giving Hollands the loss.
