After playing three years for the DSL Orioles in the Dominican Summer League, he came to the United States and spent six seasons in the O's farm system. After the 2006 season, he was claimed off waivers by the Milwaukee Brewers. He began the year with the Huntsville Stars and posted a 1.47 ERA and notched 17 saves in 37 outings before being promoted to the AAA Nashville Sounds.
After the 2007 campaign, Salas was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates as part of the trade that brought Salomon Torres to the Brewers. He began 2008 by going 2-0 with a 0.77 ERA and 2 saves in 14 appearances for the Indianapolis Indians and was recalled by the Pirates in May.
