Biographical Information[edit]

Marcos Cobos played as high as AAA and was on the Panamanian national team.

Cobos was on Panama's team in the 1948 Amateur World Series. [1] He was the defensive All-Star catcher in the 1951 Amateur World Series. [2] He made his minor league debut in 1952 with the Mexicali Eagles, hitting .332/.399/.495. [3] Among players with 200+ AB, he was 7th in the Southwest International League in average.

Playing for Chesterfield, he singled in his only at-bat in the 1953 Caribbean Series and scored a run. [4] The Pittsburgh Pirates farmhand split 1953 between the Billings Mustangs (.239/.375/.283 in 30 G), Waco Pirates/Longview Pirates (.248/.341/.416 in 40 G) and Denver Bears (.269 in 7 G). [5]

Returning to Denver, this time for a full season, he hit .219/.366/.217 in 1954 as the backup to Mel Brookey. In 1955, he batted .290/.367/.406 for the Lincoln Chiefs, backing up Harry Dunlop. His fourth straight Western League season was 1956, when he batted .242/.339/.416 for Lincoln, backing up Joe Zavattaro. He was the main backstop for Cerveza Balboa in the 1957 Caribbean Series, going 4 for 19 with a run and two RBI, starting ahead of León Kellman. [6]

That summer, he played briefly in AAA for the first time with the Columbus Jets (Danny Kravitz and Harding Peterson were the two main catchers there), hitting .260/.315/.300 in 15 games. he also batted .313/.373/.458 in 57 games for the Tigres de México, starting a connection in Mexican baseball. He was 2 for 11 for Carta Vieja in the 1958 Caribbean Series, splitting catching duties with Billy Shantz. [7] In 1958, he was with Columbus (.233/.361/.333 in 13 G) and Lincoln (.284/.379/.372 in 62 G).

He split 1959 between Columbus (5 for 14) and the Salt Lake City Bees (.162/.273/.189 in 14 G). Backing up Shantz with Marlboro for the 1960 Caribbean Series, he was 1 for 4 with a run. Panama would not play in another Caribbean Series for 59 years. [8] Signing with the Diablos Rojos del México for 1960, he hit .285/.342/.405, backing up Alberto Palafox.

For the '61 Diablos Rojos, he batted .294/.361/.355 and fielded .981 as Palafox's backup. He split 1962 between the Diablos Rojos and the Petroleros de Poza Rica, hitting a combined .246/.329/.344. [9] He did not play in the Mexican League in 1963. In 1964, he hit .262/.345/.395 for the Charros de Jalisco. [10] He dropped down to the Mexican Southeast League in 1965, batting .227/.338/.358 for the Puerto Mexico Portenos and taking over as manager for Alfonso Pena for the second half, going 19-26-1. He led the league's catchers in games (83), putouts (396), assists (53), errors (10) and double plays (tied with 4). His 10 sacrifice flies were two shy of leader Rafael Alomar. [11] Replaced as skipper for '66, he remained with Puerto Mexico, batting .231/.313/.329 and pacing catchers in putouts (414) and fielding percentage (.987). [12]

Cobos was later involved in Little League in Panama. [13]
