Mansfield University of Pennsylvania was founded as Mansfield Classical Seminary and was known as Mansfield State Teachers College from 1927 to 1960 and Mansfield State College until 1983. Through 2020, it had produced six major leaguers, most notably Hall-of-Famer Hughie Jennings. In July 2021, Pennsylvania higher education officials announced that Bloomsburg would merge with Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania and Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania in response to financial difficulties and declining enrollment, and each institution would represent a campus of a single university. In March 2022, the new institution was created to oversee the three universities, and was named the Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania.
