Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Kyle Aselton played from 2004 to 2009 and again in 2011. He won one minor league ERA title.
Amateur Career[edit]
He was 9-1 with a 0.77 ERA as a high school senior. Originally drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 29th round of the 2001 amateur draft out of high school (one round before they took Billy Sadler), he opted for college. He went 15-1 with a 0.77 ERA in junior college (8-1, 0.66 as a sophomore), striking out a school-record 133 though he walked 54 in 116 1/3 IP. He transferred to Oregon State and was 0-1 with a save and a 5.40 ERA out of their bullpen, walking 19 in 20 innings. He was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 11th round of the 2004 amateur draft; the scout was Bill Lohr.
Minors[edit]
He began his professional career that season and went 1-4 with a 4.54 ERA in 15 games (four starts), striking out 38 batters in 37 2/3 innings for the Elizabethton Twins. He pitched for the Beloit Snappers in 2005, going 6-2 with a 2.49 ERA in 41 games (10 starts). In 112 innings, he allowed only 80 hits, while striking out 113 batters. He led the Midwest League in ERA by .06 ahead of Andy Sonnanstine and was 11th in the minor leagues in ERA, while placing third in lowest opponent average (.199). He failed to make the MWL All-Star team as Sean Gallagher was picked as the right-handed starter.
With the Fort Myers Miracle in 2006, Aselton went 9-5 with a 3.79 ERA in 22 starts though he walked 54 in 97 1/3 IP. He missed a month with a left elbow strain but still finished second on the team in wins (two behind Anthony Swarzak). Moving to the bullpen in 2007, also spent with Fort Myers, he went 0-3 with a 3.79 ERA in 39 games (four starts). He allowed a .225 average and struck out 81 in 71 1/3 innings. In 2008, he pitched for the New Britain Rock Cats, going 8-6 with a save and a 4.24 ERA in 38 games (four starts), issuing 60 walks in 110 1/3 IP.
He signed as a free agent with the Chicago White Sox but struggled with the 2009 Birmingham Barons (9 H, 7 BB, 8 R in 4 2/3 IP) and was released. He then signed with the Cincinnati Reds but was no better for the Carolina Mudcats (5 BB, 8 H, 8 R in 3 2/3 IP, 0-1). He did not pitch in 2010, but returned to professional baseball for 2011, going 1-3 with two saves and a a 5.80 ERA in 42 relief appearances for the independent Atlantic League Road Warriors.
Overall, Aselton spent seven years in the minor leagues, going 25-24 with a 4.12 ERA in 206 games (54 starts). In 496 innings, he had 476 strikeouts.
