Biographical Information[edit]
Kohei Wong was the first professional baseball player raised in Singapore. He is the brother of Ryota Wong. [1]
Kohei was a third baseman on the Singaporean national team in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. [2] He signed with the Ibaraki Astro Planets of Japan's Baseball Challenge League for 2023 to become the first Singapore-raised pro baseball player (Robin Jennings was born in Singapore but did not grow up there). [3] He hit .348 with five runs in the 2023 East Asia Baseball Cup. [4] Singapore played in the 2022 Asian Games (held in '23 after COVID-19-based delays). In their Asian Games baseball debut, he hit third and batted third versus Laos. His first-inning double off Mung Chuevakham was the team's first hit. He was 2-for-8 with a double, steal and run in their two games, handling one putout and seven assists error-free at the hot corner. He tied Naeem Bin Zahrin for second on the team in hits, one behind Mohamed Mikhail Ming Bin Tan Sabri, and he and his brother Ryota had their only extra-base hits (both two-baggers). He tied Bin Tan Sabri for the team lead in total bases. He also led the team in assists; no one else had more than three. [5]
