Biographical Information

Juan Carlos Llamas spent five seasons in the minors, in four different organizations. He is the son of Pompeyo Llamas.

Llamas had a great pro debut, hitting .383 with 7 homers and 59 RBI for the 1998 DSL Yankees. He was second in the Dominican Summer League in average, .004 shy of the pace and was 5 RBI shy of the lead. He failed to make the league All-Star team, amazingly. In 1999, he played for the DSL Yankees (.316) and GCL Yankees (2 for 4, two walks).

Llamas next moved to the Cincinnati Reds chain. He hit .299/.344/.368 for the GCL Reds and .316/.316/.368 for the Billings Mustangs. Despite hitting well over .300 in three years so far, he again switched organizations. With the Kansas City Royals in 2001, he hit .260/.318/.407 for the Spokane Indians and .237/.320/.362 for the Burlington Bees.

After two years out of the minors, he returned in 2004 to bat .303/.343/.475 for the Detroit Tigers' Oneonta Tigers club and 1 for 5 for the West Michigan Whitecaps. He led the New York-Penn League in games played (74), was 10th in average, 2nd in RBI (55, 10 behind Mario Garza) and was named the All-Star third baseman.

That was it for Llamas in the minors, even though he had a career average over .300 when all was done.

Llamas played for the Colombian national team several times. He was 5 for 15 with a double, two walks and a team-high four runs in the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games. In the 2006 COPABE Olympic Qualifiers, he batted .353/.450/.765 as Colombia's top hitter but did make five errors in five games at the hot corner. Juan was with Colombia when they won Silver at the 2010 South American Games.
