Biographical Information

Jose Dominguez pitched for six seasons in the minors, briefly reaching AAA.

The Minnesota Twins took Dominguez in the 26th round of the 1984 amateur draft. He made his pro debut with the Visalia Oaks that summer, going 2-7 with a 4.85 ERA and walking 54 in 85 1/3 innings while throwing 13 wild pitches. He returned to Visalia in 1985 and improved to 8-6, 2.95 with 11 saves in 56 outings, though control remained spotty (61 BB in 106 2/3 IP). Had he qualified, he would have ranked second in the California League in ERA, behind Jeff Parrett. He also was third in the loop in games pitched. He split 1986 between Visalia (6-6, 5 Sv, 3.09 in 38 G) and the Orlando Twins (0-1, 11.72, 34 H, 10 BB in 17 2/3 IP).

The Twins dealt him that off-season to the San Francisco Giants, sending him along with Bryan Hickerson and Ray Velasquez for Dan Gladden and David Blakley. In 1987, the right-hander was 4-6 with 16 saves and a 2.62 ERA for the Fresno Giants, with 70 hits in 89 1/3 innings. He tied for 4th in the Cal League in saves. He was promoted to the Shreveport Captains in 1988 and remained an effective closer (3-6, 22 Sv, 2.71); his control was much sharper, as he only walked 20 in 79 2/3 innings. He led the Texas League in saves, 5 ahead of runner-up Jeff Fassero. In 1989, Dominguez ended his career on a poor note with Shreveport (2-9, 6 Sv, 4.90, 1.74 WHIP in 40 G) and the Phoenix Firebirds (1-2, 3.86 in 11 G).

Overall, he had gone 26-43 with 60 saves and a 3.72 ERA in 284 minor league games (12 starts), walking 209 in 386 1/3 innings.
