Biographical Information

Infielder Jose Rondon began his professional career in the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim system in 2011 at 17 years old. He hit .315/.378/.406 in 49 games for the DSL Angels that year.

Other seasons of note include 2013, when he hit .293/.359/.399 with 13 stolen bases for the Orem Owlz and 2014, when he hit .315/.363/.404 with 13 steals for the AZL Angels, Inland Empire 66ers and Lake Elsinore Storm in the San Diego Padres system. He had been traded to the Padres with pitchers R.J. Alvarez and Elliot Morris and infielder Taylor Lindsey for pitchers Huston Street and Trevor Gott on July 19th of that year. He stole 18 more bases in 2015. He reached Triple A for the first time in 2016. He was called up to the majors for the first time on July 29th of that year and pinch hit in his first at bat for pitcher Edwin Jackson that day. He grounded into a double play against Cincinnati Reds pitcher Brandon Finnegan.

Going into 2015, he had been named the Padres #9 prospect by Baseball America. The publication ranked him #5 in the organization going into 2016.

In 2019, as a back-up infielder for the Chicago White Sox, he was used to pitch some mop-up relief in a 6-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox. His pitches to the plate were so slow, somewhere in the low 50 mph, that the Statcast radar was unable to pick them up! Showing that speed is not everything, he managed to pitch a scoreless inning.

Rondon and Dilson Herrera were both born on the same day, March 3, 1994, and in the spring of 2020 both were non-roster invitees in the Baltimore Orioles spring training camp. Before the 2022 season, he was handed an 80-game suspension for testing positive for boldenone, a PED; he was a free agent at the time.
