Biographical Information[edit]

John Scolinos was the head baseball and football coach at George Pepperdine College from 1946 to 1960 and at California State Polytechnic University-Pomona from 1962 to 1991. He led Pomona to the Division II College World Series in 1976, 1979, 1980, 1983, and 1985, winning in 1976, 1980, and 1983. Scolinos has the longest coaching tenure in the history of both schools. He also managed Team USA in the 1980 Amateur World Series.

Pepperdine annually awards the John Scolinos Distinguished Player Award to a Pepperdine baseball player in recognition of exemplary behavior during a season or career in the name of the legendary Scolinos. Pomona plays its home games at Scolinos Field. He was named to the American Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame and the College Baseball Hall of Fame.

As a first baseman, Scolinos played minor league baseball from 1937 to 1941, reaching as high as class C. He served in the Air Force from 1942 to 1945 as a radio operator. In 1947, he saw action as a U.S. Merchant Marine seaman.

His nephew Mike Scolinos was a college coach.
