Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher John Massarelli was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 8th round of the 1987 amateur draft. He played in the Astros system from 1987 to 1993 reaching AAA. He also played in the minor league chains of the Florida Marlins (1994-1995), Cleveland Indians (1995), and San Diego Padres (1996). He played for the Chianan Luka in the Taiwan Major League in 1997.
The outfielder/catcher played in 932 games in his decade-long minor league career and he hit .271 with 19 home runs, 275 RBI and 288 stolen bases. He stole over 30 bases five times, peaking at 54 in a season. He was a Florida State League All-Star in 1990.
In 1999 Massarelli was a coach for the Michigan Battle Cats. He managed in the Astros' chain from 2000 to 2003, and has managed in the Frontier League since 2004. Massarelli is also an assistant coach at Malone College.
On August 24, 2007, Massarelli recorded his 500th career win, with the Washington Wild Things' 6-5 victory over the Gateway Grizzlies at Consol Energy Park.
In 2010, he was inducted into the Akron Baseball Hall of Fame.
His brother is Dan Massarelli.
