Biographical Information[edit]

After winning the Indiana Mr. Baseball Award, pitcher Jim Brauer was selected by the Montréal Expos in the 29th round of the 2000 amateur draft. He instead attended the University of Michigan, and he was later drafted by the Colorado Rockies (17th round, 2003) and New York Mets (42nd round, 2004) while in school there.

He was 2-3 with a 1.84 ERA for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in the prestigious Cape Cod League in 2001. In 2002, he had a 4-6, 5.06 record for the Wolverines. Back with the Red Sox for the summer, he was 3-3 with a 1.77 ERA and 63 K in 56 IP. On July 24, 2002, he threw a no-hitter against the Chatham Athletics. He finished second in the circuit in whiffs, four behind Tim Stauffer. Jim had a 5-3, 2.26 record for Yarmouth-Dennis in 2003 to maintain his top performance in the Cape Cod League. In the 2004 college season, his record was 7-3, 4.27. He made All-Big Ten Conference alongside J.A. Happ, Glen Perkins and two other starters. As a college senior, he had his best year yet, 7-2, 2.54 with only 20 walks in 110 innings. He was named Big Yen Pitcher of the Year and led the Conference in ERA.

After graduation, he was chosen by the Florida Marlins in the 9th round of the 2005 amateur draft, two rounds after they took fellow righty Chris Leroux and one round after Aaron Bates. Brauer played three years in their organization, briefly reaching the AA level.

In his pro debut, Brauer was 3-2 with a 4.22 ERA but .225 opponent average for the Jamestown Jammers. He split 2006 between the Jupiter Hammerheads (5-8, 5.56, .307 opponent average) and Carolina Mudcats (0 R in 6 IP). He did not have the highest ERA on Jamestown's staff - that was future major leaguer Tim Wood. In 2007, Jim played for the GCL Marlins (0 R in 3 IP), Jupiter (0-5, 6.75, .342 opponent average) and Carolina (0-3, 4.02, .317 opponent average). Overall, his minor league record was 9-18, 5.25.
