Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Jason Knapp was a top prospect whose career was derailed by injury.
Knapp was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the second round of the 2008 amateur draft (the 75th overall pick, between Zeke Spruill and Charlie Blackmon) and made his pro debut that summer with the GCL Phillies, going 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA in 7 games, striking our 38 in 31 innings. Baseball America rated him as the 4th-best Gulf Coast League prospect after hitters Aaron Hicks, Kyle Skipworth and Jefry Marte. He started 2009 with the Lakewood Blue Claws and went 2-7 with a 4.01 ERA in 17 starts. In July of that season, while on the disabled list, he was traded to the Cleveland Indians as part of a six-player trade that sent Cliff Lee to Philadelphia. Cleveland demanded him as part of the deal, which also included prospects Carlos Carrasco, Lou Marson and Jason Donald to Cleveland and Ben Francisco to Philly. After the deal, Jason only made four appearances for the Lake County Captains with a 5.40 ERA in four outings. Overall, he fanned 123 batters in 97 innings, good for a tie for 9th in the South Atlantic League in whiffs. He was rated by Baseball America as the #7 prospect in the SAL (between Jordan Lyles and Jared Mitchell. Knapp never recovered from his arm trouble, though, needing operations, and saw his final action in 2010 with the AZL Indians (0-2, 18 K in 12 1/3 IP, 1.46) and Lake County (1-0, 3.94 in 4 G, 29 K in 16 IP). The one-time prospect was done with baseball at age 20, with a composite record of 6-10, 3.63 and 208 strikeouts (116 hits, 71 walks as well) in 156 1/3 IP.
