Biographical Information[edit]
Jared Mitchell was a first-round pick in 2009.
Mitchell hit .506 as a high school senior and stole 29 bases in 30 tries. He was All-State in his last three years of high school, winning Gatorade Player of the Year honors for the State of Louisiana as a senior. In football, he threw for 1,720 yards as a junior in high school and ran for 834 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Minnesota Twins took him in the 10th round of the 2006 amateur draft but he opted for college. Baseball America had rated him the #3 high school athlete that year.
In college, Mitchell played football as well as baseball; in football, he won a national BCS title in 2007 as a wide receiver for LSU. He hit .258/.340/.349 as a freshman while stealing 18 bases in 20 tries. As a sophomore, Mitchell improved his batting line to .297/.363/.469 and he stole 16 bases in 18 attempts. On May 17, he scored from second base on a sacrifice fly. Also that year, he hit the first inside-the-park homer for LSU in 9 years.
As a junior, Jared batted .325/.471/.557 with 35 steals in 44 tries and 60 runs in 61 games going into the 2009 College World Series. He was second in the Southeastern Conference in steals. The Chicago White Sox picked him in the first round of the 2009 amateur draft, 23rd overall. He was the first first-rounder for LSU since Aaron Hill in 2003. Mitchell then starred in the College World Series, winning Most Outstanding Player honors while leading LSU to its sixth title, giving him national college titles in both football and baseball.
Mitchell was signed by scout Warren Hughes and made his pro debut with the Kannapolis Intimidators on July 17, going 2 for 4 with a double and two runs. He had six hits in his first 12 at-bats as a pro.
