Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Jared Burton attended West Oak High School, in his hometown of Westminster, South Carolina, before attending Western Carolina University. He was selected by the Oakland A's in the 8th round of the 2002 draft. Burton was signed by scout Kelly Heath and spent the season playing with the Vancouver Canadians of the Northwest League. He spent the next year with the Kane County Cougars, where he went 2-1 with a 2.27 ERA in 15 games before missing the last three months of the season with a shoulder injury. He missed the first half of 2004 before returning and pitching for the AZL Athletics and the Modesto A's. He played for the Stockton Ports in 2005 and saved 24 games, third best in the California League. In 2006, he advanced to the Midland RockHounds, where he posted a 4.14 ERA but only allowed 71 hits in 74 innings. Following the season, he was taken by the Cincinnati Reds in the Rule 5 draft.
Burton made the Reds Opening Day roster and debuted against the Chicago Cubs on April 4th. It was not a day to remember as he walked the only three batters he faced (one was subsequently caught stealing) before being removed. Still, he managed to stick with the Reds all season, pitching 47 games with a record of 4-2, 2.71. He was back in 2008 and pitched another 54 games, going 5-1, 3.22. In 2009, he was 1-0, 4.40 in 53 games. The Reds were improving as a team while his ERA was rising year after year, and in 2010, he could not hold on to his spot in the bullpen. He only pitched 4 times in the majors, giving no hits or runs in 3 1/3 innings. He also spent most of 2011 in the minor leagues, being called up in September to pitch 6 times, with no decisions and a 3.86 ERA. After the season, he became a free agent and signed with the Minnesota Twins for 2012. In 203 appearances over three seasons, he was 8-16 with a 3.47 ERA, bouncing around Triple A with several clubs in his final season, 2015.
